Novena to the Sacred Heart – Day 5

Quote

We must never be discouraged or give way to anxiety. . . but ever have recourse to the adorable Heart of Jesus… I think He intends to try you like gold in the crucible, so as to number you amongst His most faithful servants. Therefore you must lovingly embrace all occasions of suffering, considering them as precious tokens of His love. To suffer in silence and without complaint is what He asks of you.” -St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

Reflection

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque’s message was primarily centered on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, yet her vision and the devotion she promoted would have been incomplete without any mention of suffering. For to be united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is to also be united to the sufferings of Jesus, whereby He gave up His own life out of love for us and in obedience to the Father. It is a reality that God allows us to suffer, and as we witness in the lives of the saints, some of the best individuals are often given to suffer most. Yet, with Christ’s Heart as our refuge, we are never abandoned in our suffering. With Christ’s Heart as example, we know that this suffering is the way to everlasting life with God, to detaching from ourselves, this world, and the esteem of creatures and to allow for humble attachment to God alone.
