Fr Phil Hurley SJ will join Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network-USA [Apostleship of Prayer] as full-time Assistant Director beginning in April 2025. His work will be wide-ranging– strategic planning, leading retreats around the USA, assisting with Hearts on Fire retreats for young adults, working with young Jesuits, and more.

Fr. Phil Hurley, S.J. recently served as university chaplain at Loyola University Maryland. Previously Fr. Phil was pastor at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Raleigh, NC from 2014-2022. From 2009-2013, he served as youth and young adult director for the U.S. office of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer), and directed the Hearts on Fire retreat program based on the Spiritual Exercises. A graduate of Baltimore’s Mount Saint Joseph High School, he also served as parochial vicar at Old St. Joseph’s Church in Philadelphia and taught at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC.

A founding member of the Jesuit Tracks music collective, Fr. Phil has also served in a number of part-time roles, including serving in chaplaincy work at San Quentin Prison in California, organizing pilgrimages for Magis/World Youth Day and the national Jesuit schools gathering at the March for Life, working at the Damien Social Welfare Center in Dhanbad, India, and the Jesuit Family Retreat Program at Blue Ridge Summit in Maryland.

A graduate of Loyola University Maryland, he is bilingual in English and Spanish and has spent time in Mexico, Chile and Bolivia as well as in Spanish-language ministry in the U.S. He earned an M.A. in Philosophy from St. Louis University and an M.Div. from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA.

Fr Joe Laramie SJ, PWPN national director stated, “I met Phil in 1999; he was a young Jesuit at Saint Louis University and I was a college student there. Phil inspired me to explore a Jesuit vocation. We’ve remained friends and I invited him to join our board. We’ve played music together and celebrated Mass together. Fr Phil will strengthen our outreach to youth and young adults, especially through our Hearts on Fire retreats. Along with Grace Urbanski, who will join our office this summer as assistant director, we are marching into 2025 with joy and hope!”

Fr Phil said, “I’m joyful and hopeful as I look ahead to joining the team at the PWPN-USA. I’ve seen in many different cultures, settings, and circumstances the way people’s lives are transformed by encountering the love of the Heart of Jesus, offering themselves to him, and living out his mission as his disciples in the world. To again be offered a part in helping all that happens throughout the U.S. with this organization is a real consolation.”

The Pope’s Prayer Network is a 175-year-old spiritual mission uniting hearts to the Heart of Jesus in the heart of the Church– promoting a life of prayer for all people through devotion to the Sacred Heart and the monthly intentions of the Holy Father.
