God gives us the gift of life, to live and to love generously. Yet so often we find ourselves feeling poor and disoriented, caught between our deep desires and our frustrations, unable to resolve personal crises or find inner peace.
We all long to love and be loved. And yet, that path is often difficult, marked by misunderstandings and struggles. How many times do we fall into destructive patterns that harm others and wound ourselves? How often do our actions, words, and thoughts lead us away from life and toward death?
The rejection of love can become so strong, through selfishness, pride, hatred, or contempt, that it locks us inside ourselves, isolates us from others, and distances us from God. This “lock-in,” as described in The Way of the Heart, Step 2, leads us away from God. If you find yourself in this place, searching for meaning and direction, the Way of the Heart can offer a path forward.
In those stormy moments, where do you place your anchor? The challenge is that we often do not recognize the root of our suffering: sin. Its poison brings fear and slowly drains life from us. We cannot free ourselves alone. We must rely on God.
Pope Leo reminds us that “God is ready to ‘throw Himself away’ for us, and Jesus is willing to die to transform our lives.” This is the hope that sustains us, a hope that surpasses daily pleasures or improved circumstances. It carries us through trials and keeps our eyes fixed on the greatness of our true goal: heaven (Spes non confundit).
“This hope we have is like an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
The image of an anchor powerfully illustrates the stability we gain when we entrust ourselves to Jesus, even amid life’s turbulent waters. No storm can overcome us, because we are anchored in hope. This Jubilee is a strong invitation to embrace that hope, to seek refuge in God (Spes non confundit).
You are not alone. Others carry the same burdens and longings. Jesus walks with you, urging you to keep moving forward. And He invites you to encourage those who are discouraged, to walk together, holding fast to this sure and steady anchor.
