Francis Xavier was born in 1506 in the Kingdom of Navarre in Spain. His family was quite prosperous. In 1525, he went to the University of Paris to begin studies. Four years later, in 1529, he roomed with a man named Pierre Favre, perhaps better known to us as Peter Faber. Peter brought another student, Ignatius of Loyola, with him. Francis was cynical towards Ignatius, who was making efforts to convert students and convinced Pierre to become a priest. Ignatius slowly eroded Francis’ resistance. He joined Ignatius in forming the Society of Jesus and was ordained in 1537. In 1540, the King of Portugal asked for missionaries for his territories in India, and Francis Xavier formed part of this team.
